At A Glance: California’s turkey population has been one of the great conservation stories of the past century. Restocking efforts have created excellent hunting opportunities throughout much of the state, with the northern part of the state being a stronghold. California is home to three subspecies of wild turkey (Eastern, Rio Grande, and Merriam), making it attractive for hunters wishing to take a mixed bag. The “Wine Country” region provides hunters with a unique and scenic hunt, and northern California as a whole has a very strong population. With numerous public hunt opportunities and a season bag limit of three gobblers, California is a state all avid turkey hunters must visit at least once.
